EDSALL, JOSEPH H.
Greenville Independent, Greenville, MI-August 23, 1922
J. H. Edsall Passes at Age of 85
Ill only few days, veteran retired business man answers last call.
Joseph H. Edsall, father of Percy D. Edsall, local postmaster, passed away last Wednessday evening, quietly and peacefully, at the home of his son and only child. He was a man who formed a connecting link between the present and the distant past, when the country was new, the pleasures simple and the community life far more important and far more closely interwoven than it is today.
Mr. Edsall was born at Ithaca, N.Y., on Jan. 21, 1837, coming to Greenville early in July, 1868, since which time he has resided here continuously excepting a brief period of a few months spent in Dakota in 1882, when that state was thrown open to settlement, he being one of the many from this region who took out a homestead and tree claim.
Mr. Edsall's introduction to the people of Greenville was as manager of the then new Merritt House, a three story wooden structure standing on the southeast corner of Lafayette and Montcalm streets, which was destroyed by fire not many months after Mr. Edsall severed his connection with it. But few of those who now live here remember it. After leaving the hotel work, Mr. Edsall engaged in the restaurant business, in which he continured, in various locations, until he reached the age of seventy, when he retired permantntly.
Those whose residence here dates back far enough well remember how clean, bright and orderly Mr. Edsall's different places of business were. Edsall's restaurant was always a credit to the city, a place of which every resident felt proud and for which no one ever had occasion to apologize. As a caterer he was unexcelled.
Mr. Edsall always had hosts of friends, not confined to those of his own generation, but found among those of all ages and conditions. He was kind, sympathetic and genial, and never, even to the last, lost his interest in the clean and wholesome pleasures and amusements of the young. While his body gradually succumbed to the growing infirmities of the years, his heart remained fresh and his mind vigorous to the end.
No obituary of Mr. Edsall would be complete without mention of the unusually strong and touching affection existing between him and his son. There are few of his day and age who would be so missed by the people of Greenville and vicnity as Joseph H. Edsall will be.
